Understanding The Orthotic Evaluation

There are numerous orthotic devices that can help improve a patient’s quality of life. Whether it is an functionalorthotics-process-evaluation electrical stimulation device, a typical AFO, or a shoe insert, it all begins with your initial evaluation.

We begin your evaluation by looking at the information your physician, therapists, and care team provide to us. Our practitioners will evaluate your muscle strength and range of motion, determine the nature of your problem, consider any extenuating circumstances, and decide which orthosis matches your needs the best.

There is always more than one type of brace that can be used. Our practioners are some of the most experienced in the field, which provides them with the knowledge to provide our patients with the most appropriate orthosis available.

Some factors that could influence the type of orthotic device you need include:

  • Weight
  • Height
  • Degree of sensation
  • Swelling Issues
  • Lifestyle
  • And More

Once our initial evaluation is complete, we spend time discussing the options with you to help determine the best course of action. We’ll explain the different devices available, provide information on the pros and cons of each, and answer any questions you may have. We also believe strongly in a team-based approach to providing care, which is why we include your therapists and physician in the ultimate decision.

process-evaluation-orthoticsWe know that it can be confusing, frustrating, and even frightening when you need orthotic assistance, which is why we never rush through an initial evaluation. We want you to be comfortable and confident when wearing the device. We’ll make certain that you understand everything about your device including how to care for it, how to use it, and how it works.

After your initial evaluation, you’ll be fitted for the device and begin the road to recovery. But thanks to our commitment to continuing care, you won’t be alone. We continue to monitor your progress through follow up appointments. As your body heals, changes may need to be made and subsequent evaluations may be required to ensure you are getting the most out of you orthotic device. When the time comes for this, we’ll be ready. But it all begins with the initial evaluation.
